AGBS (The Art Galleries at Black Studies at the Academy of Texas) is a platform from which to unpack timely social problems, through the arts. From exhibitions celebrating contemporary creative expression, to displays of archives and material civilization, AGBS is the sole on-campus entity dedicated to showcasing narratives of Africa and the African Diaspora. Comprised of 2 galleries—The Christian-Green Gallery and the Idea Lab—AGBS spaces are premiere destinations for anyone who seeks to connect with narratives that affect us all.

MEET OUR STAFF

DR. CHERISE SMITH | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Associate Professor Cherise Smith joined the Department of Fine art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. She offers courses in and has published articles on African American and African Diaspora art, the history of photography, and contemporary art. Her manuscript, Enacting Others: Politics of Identity in Eleanor Antin, Nikki S. Lee, Adrian Piper, and Anna Deavere Smith, was published past Knuckles University Printing in 2011. It examines how identity is negotiated in operation fine art by reading closely a performance work by each artist in which she takes-on the characteristics and manners of a racial, ethnic, and gender "other". She has worked in the curatorial departments of several museums and curated a number of exhibitions.

KENDYLL GROSS | CURATOR OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Kendyll holds a BA from Emory University and an MA in Art History from the Academy of Texas at Austin (UT), where she specialized in the fine art of Mesoamerica, and modern appropriations of ancient art forms. She has worked with the Blanton Museum of Art equally a Graduate Teaching Young man, and with UT'south Mesoamerica Middle equally a Curatorial Enquiry Assistant. Her public instruction feel includes researching and preparing lectures for a range of audiences—from K-12, to university groups, to museum volunteers.

PHILLIP TOWNSEND | CURATOR OF ART

Curator of Art, Phillip Townsend is a PhD candidate in the Section of Art + Art History specializing in modern and contemporary art of the African Diaspora with a focus on the politics of identity and representational strategies of BIPOC artists. He received his M.A., in Art History from UT-Austin (2016) and his B.A., in Fine art History from The University of South Florida (2014). Phillip is a co-founder of the Austin-based curatorial commonage, Neon Queen Collective. He has curated and co-curated exhibitions featuring the work of John Pinderhughes, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Charles White, Ashley Ortiz-Diaz, and most recently Adrian Armstrong.

ALEX CODLIN | EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS MANAGER

Alex holds a BA with Special Honors in Art History and an MA in Art History from The University of Texas at Austin, where she specialized in British art of the 1960s and issues of form. Previously, she was the Associate Director at the Visual Arts Middle and Director of Operations at Vault Art Services.
